چکیده

The design and operation of a novel optically accessible high-pressure combustion apparatus is presented. The apparatus provides optical access for the direct observation of the morphology and development of premixed reaction fronts at elevated pressures. A chamber-in-chamber design with an innovative connecting system allows for safe, constant-pressure measurements, alleviating the extreme overpressures encountered in high-pressure combustion processes within closed bombs. Auxiliary design features include gap-adjustable electrodes for spark ignition and ports for jet stirring. As a result, the apparatus is well suited for the study of laminar premixed flames, flame instabilities, turbulent flames, and detonations. Results from the study of centrally ignited hydrogen and methane fuels in oxygen-inert mixtures up to 60 atm initial pressure demonstrate the suitability of the apparatus for high-pressure combustion experiments. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1634358#

HCCI operation of an optically accessible diesel engine fuelled with RME fuel

Introduction In order to overcome the pollutant emission limitations the use of homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode must be considered in direct injection diesel engine using biodiesel fuel. HCCI mode reduces PM and NOx emissions without penalize the performances [1]. This occurs because the combustion develops with low temperature and burns a premixed air/fuel mixture. Biodiese...

Quantifying Statistical Measures of Diesel Spray Soot Characteristics using Laser-Induced Incandescence

Increased understanding is needed with respect to soot formation from high pressure diesel sprays as emissions standards become increasingly stringent and require complex methods for its reduction. Understanding soot formation and its spatial distributions is necessary to advance fundamental spray combustion knowledge. Given that the underlying nature of high pressure combusting diesel sprays r...

Validation of Si Combustion Model over Range of Speed, Load, Equivalence Ratio and Spark Timing

A validation study is presented of a wrinkled-ame turbulent combustion model for SI engine simulation. Predictions using a multidimensional simulation code incorporating the model are compared with extensive measurements from a special optically-accessible engine, covering a range of speeds, loads, equivalence ratios and ignition timings. The agreement obtained is generally good and within the ...
